Requirements for International Students
We welcome your interest in The FCI and
becoming a chef, and
want to assist you through
the admission process. There are two additional requirements you will
need to fulfill for admission to The FCI for any of our culinary programs.
- English language proficiency: You must demonstrate English language
proficiency can by earning a score of at least 500 (paper version)
or 173 (computerized version) on the
TOEFL exam. TOEFL scores may be submitted directly to The French
Culinary Institute through the Educational Testing Service (TOEFL
code 9059). In addition, applicants who have attended English
language schools will be regarded as having demonstrated proficiency
if the school they attended attests to the fact that the applicant
has successfully completed coursework that is generally equivalent
to a score of 500 on the TOEFL exam. Applicants who have a Bachelor’s
degree from a college or university in the United States and who
submit a transcript will be regarded as having demonstrated English
proficiency. If you have any questions about TOEFL please email
Leland Scruby or contact
him by phone at 646-254-8586.
- International applicants must also demonstrate financial resources
necessary to cover the cost of attendance: tuition and fees plus
living expenses. (For exact amounts see budget section.) Applicants
must submit an official bank statement documenting these resources.
If funding is to be provided by a sponsor, the bank statement
must be accompanied by a letter in which the sponsor pledges his/her
financial support. For more information regarding documentation
of financial resources applicants should speak to Leland Scruby.
International applicants requiring an M-1 visa should apply for
admission to The FCI a minimum of three months prior to their anticipated
program start date. International applicants must secure their visa
at least thirty days prior to the start date of their program. Failure
to do so may result in the forfeiture of the seat in the class.
