08.04.09 COCKTAILS FOR SOHO FRIENDS CELEBRATES ARTIST DONALD JUDD

On August 4, The French Culinary Institute kicked off Cocktails for SoHo Friends, a series of gatherings designed to celebrate the creative individuals who have lived and worked in SoHo, the downtown New York City neighborhood The FCI calls home.

Judd Foundation Executive Director, Barbara Hunt McLanahan; Ranier Judd, Board Member and daughter of Donald Judd; the artist Karen Gunderson and her husband, Julian Weissman from the Hirschl and Adler Gallery; author Christopher Mason and other leaders in art, fashion, and food came together to celebrate the memory of artist Donald Judd, and to enjoy two signature cocktails created by The FCI’s Nils Norén and David Arnold in Judd’s honor: Drink A made with Aquavit and Grapefruit Juice and Drink B, a mix of tequila and clarified cassis. Guests voted on which cocktail was to be named "The Judd Cocktail," after Donald Judd. The winning cocktail—by only a few votes—was the tequila and cassis drink, which will be available on the summer cocktail menu at L'Ecole, the restaurant of The French Culinary Institute.

Donald Judd is perhaps best remembered for advocating for permanent installations of works by artists in carefully selected environments, as an alternative to the temporary exhibitions designed by curators for galleries. Judd’s ideas on permanent installation came to revolutionize practices and attitudes in the art world. His own pieces, preserved by the Judd Foundation, can be viewed at his homes in New York City, located at 101 Spring Street, and in Marfa, Texas.
